Widely regarded as Piedmont’s greatest producer of Barolo, Giacomo Conterno founded the regarded estate in the early 20th century, producing world class Nebbiolo across 16 hectares in Serralunga d’Alba. Fruit for ‘Monfortino’ comes from the Cascina Francia cru, produced only in exceptional vintages. Fruit ferments for 3-4 weeks in wooden vats, followed by minimum 7 years of aging in large casks. The 2004 vintage is gorgeously layered, full of elegant aromatics and silky, well-integrated tannins. This was also the year that Giacomo passed away, making the bottle that much more special.
This tartly tannic, headily fragrant, beguilingly complex king of Italian red grapes is brimming with bright fruit and earthy funk -- in versions ranging from explosive (Barolo) to ethereal (Valtellina).
